Oil and natural gas producer Coterra Energy (CTRA) delivered strong results Monday after closing bell, including beating expectations where it matters most: free cash flow. Bottom line All line items are important, but it's free cash flow that supports cash returns to shareholders. But it's important to remember that cash flow is a function of energy prices, and is therefore largely out of management's control. Guidance Operating and free cash flow guidance missed expectations, but the numbers are purely a function of oil prices and out of management's control. Bottom lineAll line items are important, but it's free cash flow that supports cash returns to shareholders.

Traders work beneath a monitor displaying Halliburton Co. signage on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., on Monday, May 2, 2016. CNBC's Jim Cramer says don't turn bearish on Halliburton (HAL) yet — even as the oilfield services name tumbles on a slight revenue miss for its third-quarter earnings report. Halliburton, which reported quarterly results before Tuesday's opening bell, beat profit expectations but missed on revenue amid weakness in North America. "Let Halliburton [stock] come down, but this company's going to do just fine if oil stays at these prices," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street." He cited Halliburton's track record of conserving capital and sees more demand for the company's services due to oil market dynamics.

While we don't own companies as mergers-and-acquisition plays, the potential for more tie-ups could have significant implications for our remaining oil name: Coterra Energy (CTRA). Chevron's market cap is around $324 billion, while ConocoPhillips is worth roughly $152 billion, based on Thursday's stock prices. Companies in this basket could include Coterra, Devon Energy (DVN) and Diamondback Energy (FANG). Coterra is valued at roughly $22.4 billion Thursday, while Devon and Diamondback are valued at $31.7 billion and $30.5 billion, respectively. The shift has generally been positive for the stock prices of oil companies.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.

Today's question: Why would we not stay in Pioneer [until a deal with Exxon closes] to receive $253 per share? First, the official announcement on Wednesday from Exxon Mobil (XOM) that it is acquiring Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) specifies this will be an all-stock deal. In this case, the deal is that Pioneer shareholders will receive 2.3234 shares of ExxonMobil for each Pioneer share at closing. Rather, it's 2.3234 times the current price of Exxon shares. Pioneer shares are now subject to the trading action in ExxonMobil.

Dealmaking in the U.S. oil and gas patch has picked up pace as producers sought to replenish their inventory after years of under-investment. The most-prized targets for Chevron could be Coterra Energy (CTRA.N) or Devon Energy (DVN.N), he added. Others mentioned included Matador Resources (MTDR.N), Permian Resources (PR.N) and Diamondback Energy (FANG.O). Still, the Exxon deal, the industry's largest since 2016, also set off worries about stiff regulatory scrutiny over anti-competitive concerns. Exxon does not anticipate antitrust hurdles to complete the deal, expected by early 2024.

To be sure, even with Monday's advance, oil prices remain well off their late September peaks. In addition to receiving a lift from crude's gain, Coterra is benefiting from the continued strength in natural gas. On Monday, natural gas futures rose another 1%, to around $3.37 per million British thermal units. Last week, natural gas surged 14% to reach its highest price since late January. The stock's massive outperformance Friday means that any financial benefit Pioneer would receive from Monday's higher oil prices was already captured in the session prior.

Oil and natural gas prices traveled divergent paths this week, resulting in a mixed picture for the Club stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). In Thursday's session alone, natural gas prices jumped nearly 7%, as traders reacted to U.S. government data that showed a smaller-than-expected storage build. For the week, through Thursday's settle, natural gas has climbed 8.1%, building on last week's 11% advance. Natural gas on Friday morning jumped another 1.5%.
